Director of Brand Management

Job Summary:

As part of the Agency Habitat team, our Directors of Brand Management are the primary and strategic links between our clients and the agency. You’ll be responsible for a book of business consisting of multiple agency accounts. You’ll lead a team of brand managers who are tasked with maintaining a tight relationship with these accounts, identifying needs and selling agency services and talents to meet those needs. We will partner you with a Creative Director or Associate Creative Director who will serve as your team’s creative lead, managing art directors and copywriters who will back you up with killer work. As an agency, we pool our well-honed skills to craft dynamic campaigns that impact our clients’ bottom lines. Your job – and that of your direct reports’ – is to make sure projects stay on strategy, manage expectations and keep the communication flowing. As such, your ability to nurture and build relationships with current and potential clients is paramount.

Key Responsibilities:

Brand management & client account support:

  • Provide strategic branding thought leadership and expertise to expand business relationships
  • Act as the brand account team lead both internally and externally
    • Educate clients on agency philosophy and processes, and set the tone of the partnership
    • Conduct extensive research on the client’s business and competitors
    • Regularly communicate with clients to understand their long-term goals and make recommendations for/against certain strategies/tactics as appropriate
    • Help client define the role the agency can play in helping meet business objectives
    • Maintain agency/client relationship; arrange and chair meetings with clients via phone and in person
  • Collaborate with media, creative and research staff to develop marketing strategies
  • Review strategic plans, account planning and business processes/proposals submitted by brand managers on relevant client accounts
  • Lead and work with brand managers on client brand planning initiatives
  • Develop client, product and/or brand positioning statements, goals, strategic imperatives, critical success factors and key performance indicators
  • Conceptualize and work with clients and vendors to execute market research
  • Understand, analyze and develop client personas and consumer journeys
  • Assist with the development of creative briefs, project briefs and other foundational items
  • Negotiate with clients and agency staff regarding details of campaigns and projects
  • Secure all client approvals and maintain careful records
  • Review and approve all work before it moves into final production

Team leadership:

  • Set the tone for team vision and management while providing leadership, accountability and mentorship to brand strategy
  • Help communicate expectations of each role within the team
  • Ensure proper agency processes are followed by the team
  • Understand how/when to work with agency resource centers, external partners, etc.
  • Coach/assist the team with internal and account troubleshooting
  • Evaluate brand manager performance annually at a minimum
  • Guide brand managers in career and skills development
  • Maintain team morale through positive reinforcement

Team profitability oversight:

  • Lead agency/client contract negotiations in coordination with Vice President of Operations
  • Develop proposals and present project plans/cost estimates, especially for larger initiatives/tactics, to clients for approval or modification
  • Review/manage account retainers, scopes of work and project estimates and coordinate with Operations team on reviews/approvals
  • Report on client campaigns and project financial details
  • Monitor the effectiveness of campaigns/projects and work with appropriate team members to optimize accordingly
  • Review/manage financial reports, including:
    • Quotes vs. actuals
    • Quarterly projections

Business development:

  • Help to secure new business, and constantly monitor existing accounts for growth opportunities
  • Assume a leading role in new business presentations and proposals
  • Contribute to onboarding new accounts

Reports to: Vice President of Marketing or his/her designee

Supervises: Senior Brand Managers, Brand managers, Associate Brand Managers

External Relationships: Clients, Vendors, Contractors, Media


Education: B.A. in Business, Management, Marketing, Advertising, Journalism, Public Relations or Liberal Arts

Work Experience: 8+ years of relevant agency experience, including marketing or consulting, public relations, project management; knowledge of healthcare, pharmaceutical, consumer goods/services, e-commerce and/or digital marketing a plus; management experience required

Work Requirements: Occasional overtime and travel required. May work some odd hours.

  • Knowledge of sales activities, including lead generation, prospecting, qualifying, new business pitches, preparation of sales materials and communications, client interaction and entertaining, and other duties required to successfully manage and develop key accounts
  • Ability to identify key advertising opportunities and develop value propositions and sales strategies
  • Solid understanding of business terminology and contract negotiations
  • In-depth knowledge of traditional and digital media and their competitive landscape
  • Excellent organization skills, attention to detail and follow-through to resolve any outstanding issues
  • Excellent time-management skills, with the ability to meet strict deadlines and work under pressure
  • Great budgeting/estimating skills and ability to manage and communicate account budgets within the agency and with the client
  • Strong professional appearance and persona
  • Good presentation and analytic skills
  • Highly proficient in use of Microsoft Office products, social media platforms and internet browsers
