Strategic Communications Manager

Job summary:

We are looking for an individual to integrate public relations and social media in ways that garner more impressions, build more authentic relationships, and engage more deeply with the media on our clients’ and agency’s behalf. 


Key responsibilities:

  • Help create, drive, and monitor overall communications and public relations strategy while understanding how PR enhances the overall marketing program 
  • Generate strategic and creative ideas for promotional programs in a digital forward mindset 
  • Support agency and client’s vision, mission and objectives through message development and delivery to ensure the right messages get to the right audiences based on best practices, which meet legal, compliance, brand and other standards 
  • A cultural connector, you have established relationships with media, content developers and press outlets and are “in the know” with regards to how brands engage with culture and have access to “right people, right moments” 
  • Identify and connect with relevant media outlets and reporters within appropriate markets you support, building relationships that are imperative for timely and effective execution 
  • Coordinate projects and campaigns seamlessly by working with agency team to initiate and facilitate the development and execution of key projects and media strategies to support agency’s and clients’ goals 
  • Serve as the point-of-contact for all media inquiries and actively assist leadership team with the placement of articles and expert commentary in media outlets of all types 
  • Actively monitor potential threats that could damage the agency’s and/or client’s reputations and recommend strategies to manage them (i.e., reputation audits, proactive and reactive media responses, etc.) 
  • Maximize the impact of media coverage by integrating results across channels for the agency and select clients 
  • Partner with social media team on developing relevant and sustainable influencer programs and activations 
  • Work across agency teams to secure accolades and rankings for the agency, its initiatives, and its clients’ brands 
  • Serve as the spokesperson for the agency, handling contact with news outlets and across social media, while also training leadership and other agency and/or client spokespeople to deliver messages through various external communication mediums effectively 
  • Track and measure effectiveness of implemented PR and communication strategies 
  • Other tasks as needed 


Reports to: VP of Marketing 

External relationships: Clients, Media, Vendors 



  • Education: BA or BS in public relations or communications field 
  • Work experience: 3+ years of experience in a public relations or media environment 
  • Work requirements: Occasional overtime and travel required. May work some odd hours.  


Knowledge and skill set requirements:

  • Ability to identify and monitor trends in the advertising industry and translate them into public relations opportunities 
  • Results-oriented self-starter who can set strategy and drive execution with a “roll up the sleeves” approach 
  • Robust experience writing and/or editing press releases, announcements, communication plans and similar materials 
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills 
  • Strong attention to detail, with ability to prioritize and meet deadlines 
  • Ability to network and form strong, meaningful professional relationships with clients, media and vendors 
  • Possesses a strong grasp of organizational and environmental awareness 
  • Sense of humor, resilience, and desire to learn
  • Clear understanding of AP Style and implementation 
  • Ridiculous drive and work ethic; zero regard for the word “can’t” 
  • Knowledge of appropriate usage of Microsoft products  
  • Solutions-oriented attitude in both optimal and challenging situations  
  • High degree of organization with ability to deliver work in a timely fashion and meet scheduled deadlines  
  • Ability to learn quickly, produce in a fast-paced environment and work well under pressure  
  • Detail orientation with the ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously to completion and follow-through to resolve any outstanding issues  
  • Adaptability to changing circumstances and requirements  
  • Positive attitude with ability to establish good relationships and collaborate with other departments
